SAW KN+SAW mashup

Check out our new KN+SAW mashup of photos.
(tip: when you follow the link be sure to click “white out view” in the top menu for fullscreen mode!)

Katrine and I have made a unique combined slideshow of our still work. This mashup came to be, out of a predicament... now that we are shooting spots, we need the ability to show our collective 30+ years of advertising photography in very-short-amount-of-time. Our solution is to have speed on our side. I think the mashup tops out at nearly 500 photographs, but even I lost count. :-)

SAW Limey Signs Directing Duo KN+SAW

For Immediate Release

The directing team KN+SAW, consisting of Katrine Naleid and Stephen Austin Welch, has joined the roster of Limey, a Los Angeles-based production house headed by guv’nor and executive producer Andrew Denyer.

KN+SAW specialize in directing live-action lifestyle spots and are known for creating and capturing inspirational authentic lifestyle moments.

Andrew Denyer announced that Limey signed KN+SAW to exclusive commercial directorial representation in the US. Denyer notes, “As soon as I saw KN+SAW’s reel I knew I was going to like them and wanted to represent them. The sheer energy, youthfulness and emotion they manage to portray in their spec spots had to relate back to them and who they are, I was not disappointed. Their upbeat lifestyle vignettes for Ace Hardware, Zappos and Pringles in particular caught my eye.”

KN+SAW are a directing duo, as well as still photographers. Their collective 30+ years in commercial advertising photography has dovetailed beautifully over the past few years to include directing spots for creatives worldwide.

“Shooting real emotion is what we are all about,” explain KN+SAW. “We compose footage that is fresh, whimsical and a little quirky—but most importantly footage that honors the creative concept.”

Katrine and Stephen bring a vast array of clients and ad agencies they have shot for to the Limey table.

KN+SAW’s take is that, “Limey is a perfect fit for us. We are delighted to align ourselves with visionary thinkers and all the production expertise that Limey has to offer. We are excited that Limey is a balance between a boutique shop representing a small number of talented directors, yet has wide spread resources via their relationship with fellow production company Chelsea.”

Limey uses a fresh approach to commercial production. They're nimble, they're collaborative and they're transplanted from the UK (for the most part.) Together with our several decades of commercial production experience, we anticipate a prosperous partnership in rewarding creativity.

KN+SAW live and have studio space in San Francisco. They shoot regularly in LA, SF, NY & around the globe. Their work has been featured in Communication Arts, After Capture, Digital Output, Photo District News, HOW and Print.

Denyer’s industry career began as executive producer at the venerable Propaganda Films and later he served as head of production at Headquarters. Denyer then took the small shop route upon coming aboard Big Lawn Films in 2005. In 2009, Denyer joined Trio Films; in 2010 Denyer headed up his own unique brand, Limey.

Limey has its own independent sales team in place consisting of: Jared Shapiro (from indie rep firm Moustache) on the East Coast, Stacey Altman (Stacey and Co.) in the West and Texas, and Janice Harryman (Barker) and Jim Robison (Jim Robison Reps) in the Midwest.

Limey will always provide fresh work free of creative scurvy.

SAW blog it forward | Stephen Austin Welch

“What inspires me?”

Inspiration is a gift from the universe bestowed upon is. For me, inspiration will arrive unexpectedly, in a quick flash. Like a struck match, that illuminates the mind out of darkness, inspiration allows us to see new possibilities. It is inspiration that gives me my vision and love that gives me my will.

And even though I have explained that I think inspiration is a heavenly gift, it’s twin, named Muse, will often have to be wrestled to the ground. As an artist, it is my daily mission to bottle that inspiration. To take inspiration from something I internally feel, and turn it into a reality that is tangible to others.

The mediums I use: photography, filmmaking, graphic design & writing. The tools I use: keeping an open mind, listening, loving & trusting in myself.

Now that we have my pontificating out of the way... I must admit, that for me inspiration is more likely to strike while sitting at the counter in a diner, or listening to music (very LOUD) in the car, or gazing out the window on a rainy day—than looking at a framed piece in a museum.

Oh come on, I can be more specific than that! How about these favorite times of mine: candlelit breakfasts with my girlfriend, shaking craft cocktails that I’ve invented for dinner guests, honest conversations with friends, long walks in european cities bundled up in my coat & scarf, creating ‘new’ traditions and (wait for it...) good hair days!

After looking past the moustache in the mirror and deep into my eyes, here are a few [actually, closer to two hundred] of the particular things I have discovered in my life that register with my soul, put a smile on my face and get me in a good space to receive inspiration.

SAW’s inspiration list (part 1 of 2)

SAW see SAW (2009 in review)

Back in May of last year, I wrote a post titled “see SAW” where I had a grid of the pics, so far, that I had included below the signature of my monthly e-newsletters. Here is a recap of how the rest of last year’s pics turned out. Only one is a self-portrait (taken at Father’s Office in LA.) All the others, are portraits taken by Katrine Naleid. I will take this oportunity to let you know that the reason I include a pic of myself is to allow my newsletters to become more personal. Moreover to give people a window to see my personality—not just my work. And, of course, to put a face moustache with the name!
